Mets hire former catcher Brian Schneider as Triple-A manager

The promotion of Tony DeFrancesco to Carlos Beltran’s major league staff left an opening at Triple-A. The Mets filled it on Friday, hiring Brian Schneider to manage in Syracuse.

The 43-year-old Schneider, a one-time Met who also played for the Nationals/Expos and Phillies, retired following the 2012 season and returned to baseball in 2014 with the Marlins, managing Single-A Jupiter of the Florida State League for two seasons. He spent 2016-19 with the big league Marlins as their catching coach, but his contract was not renewed after this past season.

Now he is joining the Mets’ minor-league system.
